TEACHING/COACHING
Testimonials - Students & Young Professionals
"Grant's knowledge and passion for Shakespeare is second to none. His guidance and coaching have been invaluable to my development as an actor and director, and his love for Shakespeare's language is quite infectious. If you're hoping to build an enduring foundation with heightened text or fully realize the complexity of a character, I couldn't recommend Grant enough."
-Alex Coniaris (Indiana University, Bloomington IN)
"Working with Grant on Shakespeare is always insightful and transformative. His passion and extensive knowledge, combined with his patience and collaborative spirit, make every session invaluable. Grant's insight into the technical aspects of Shakespeare and his support for the actor's journey through the text is unparalleled. He provides guidance that keeps you on the right track, allowing interpretations to unfold naturally without any sense of imposition. A true master in the exploration of Shakespeare, it's always a pleasure to work with him."
-Bobby Ayala Perez, (Indiana University, Bloomington IN)
"Getting to work with Grant at Illinois Shakespeare/Illinois State was simply amazing, and I’d recommend his deep, rich, and personal experience with Shakespeare to any that would have him. I think what makes Grant special as a coach is his ability to approach the text in the context of the actor’s current strengths, understanding, and affinity to said text. I think Grant has the ability to provide many interpretations with textual and technical backing to actors who do well with heady discussions, and on the flip side, he knows how to offer advice to actors who need to a physical connection to the piece first. He is a deeply intelligent and knowledgeable human being with a gift to make Shakespeare electric on stage. It’s hard not to grow as an actor when you have Grant as a coworker or as a coach."
-Ben Matthew (University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign)
"Grant was my text coach for a Shakespeare play I was performing in (Measure for Measure). He helped me to not only understand the language the character uses but also how the language defines the character and his thoughts. Working with Grant, I was able to develop a fully realized performance that paid respect to the language and verse of Shakespeare’s work. Grant has uncovered a newfound love of Shakespeare I never thought I had. It was incredible to work with him to unlock the vision and language of my performance. His knowledge and energy were the key to my success in the show and I will carry all the things I learned from him in every future project I work on.”
-Adam Mohrs (Indiana University, Bloomington IN)
"Grant Goodman is one of the best coaches I have ever worked with. Not only is he a fantastic actor with deep and thorough skills with classical text, he is generous, kind, and an excellent leader. His dedication to his students and colleagues pushes everyone to their best, and his commitment to meaningful creative work points us all toward a better future for the arts."
-Sadie O’Conor (Jacobs School of Music, Indiana University, Bloomington IN)
"Working with Grant Goodman has, quite simply, changed the course of my career. As a performer with a primary focus in musical theatre, Grant’s instruction has brought the world of straight acting and Shakespeare within reach in a way I hadn’t thought possible. His knowledge of acting technique and repertoire is expansive, and he truly goes above and beyond for his students. When I reached out asking for help to choose a new Shakespeare monologue, Grant not only provided me with a list of sixteen potential monologues (with notes, of course), he also coached me through my pieces over the course of multiple sessions. In our work with Shakespeare’s texts, it finally feels like I’m working with the language instead of fighting against it. His teaching style creates an extraordinarily safe environment where I felt comfortable to make mistakes, ask questions, and have an open discussion. Outside of my instruction, Grant provided resources and recommendations so that I could keep studying on my own, and he has sought out internships, classes, and other learning opportunities that would suit the current phase of my career. I’m more prepared for every audition I step into because we’ve gone over specific steps for character analysis and text work. He’s encouraged me to look past my casting type and seek out the kinds of roles that I want to play. And above all, I’ve become a more confident actor because I have Grant on my team. I cannot recommend Grant Goodman’s coaching enough and would advise an actor in any stage of their career to seek out his expertise."
-Katie Calderone (University of Utah/Professional Actor - New York, NY)
"Grant was a great help to me when I worked with him in Measure for Measure. Grant gave me ideas on how I should play the two characters I played and how to keep them separate and distinct entities. He was also a great sounding board, affirming my suggestions when I had the right idea on handling the characters and nudging me in the right direction when I didn’t quite grasp the ideas. All of that was useful to me as an undergraduate coming back to Shakespeare in college after nearly two decades away."
-Jeff Craft (Indiana University, Bloomington IN)
"Grant is so knowledgeable about every aspect of his work and it really shows through his coaching! I got help with a self-tape for an audition. Beyond just doing a deep dive with the text, he helped me break down all the components of submitting a good self tape. He is great at meeting people where they are and helped me learn to approach auditions with more productivity and efficiency. He is also very quick and thorough with feedback, so it was easy for me to see a difference from beginning to end. The passion and enthusiasm he has for his craft is inspiring to say the least, and I’m definitely better for working with him."
-Idman Adan (University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, MN)
“Having the opportunity to work with Grant Goodman on two Shakespeare productions has provided me with the invaluable experience of carefully dissecting each word and line of the Bard’s scripts. Goodman preaches knowledge, imagery, and vocal muscularity as quintessential elements to successfully performing such challenging literature.”
-Caden Hamscher (Indiana University, Bloomington IN)
“Grant really helped me really get down into the detail of just how complex and riveting Shakespeare is and can be. Grant's passion for Shakespeare truly shines through and is inspiring to any young actors like myself who are taking their first steps with the Bard’s work.”
-Dean Mitchell Kelldorf (Professional Actor - Los Angeles, CA)
"I had the incredibly fortunate opportunity to be directed by Grant in Indiana University’s production of Macbeth in 2021. By the end of our run, Grant had singlehandedly convinced me of Shakespeare’s brilliance and power as well as persuaded me to add a theatre minor to my degree. Grant’s vast depth of knowledge of Shakespeare paired with his extensive performance career, makes him invaluable as a director. Amidst all his credits and acclaim, Grant maintains a passion for up-and-coming, community-based theatre: understanding that theatre has been and should be a collective, approachable art-form that unites people across space and time. This results in a truly unique, collaborative, and artistically fulfilling experience when working with him and one I hope to experience again. I cannot sing Grant’s praises enough."
-Eirene Stavropoulos (Indiana University, Bloomington IN)
"Grant helped me with two monologues I was preparing for a competition, and I ended up winning a sizable cash prize! He helped me break out of my habits and explore a multitude of news ways to approach the pieces, and showed me how I could apply Shakespearean techniques to strengthen my work in contemporary pieces as well. He has a great eye and is an excellent communicator, giving clear and helpful adjustments and offering a wealth of great ideas."
-Gabriel Armstrong (Indiana University, Bloomington IN)
"I first worked with Grant Goodman in IU Theatre’s production of Macbeth; he has since become a beloved mentor and friend. I am a Masters student at the Jacobs School of Music, and I have performed with numerous directors in opera, theater, and musical theater, who have possessed varying levels of competency. Working with Grant has been one of the highlights of my graduate, and performing, career. Rarely do I find myself wholly seen as an artist. Grant acknowledged my strengths, saw the full breadth of my abilities, trusted that I would bring these strengths to each rehearsal and performance, and, even with this extant foundation, understood I possessed yet untapped potential. Grant worked tirelessly to expand my capacity as a performer and storyteller within the structure of the text, and he does this with all students who approach him, regardless of their familiarity with Shakespeare. With immense respect, passion, and diligence, Grant shares his deep font of experience with unbridled generosity. I do not perform any Shakespeare unless I have brought it to Grant because I know that his guidance stems, always, from a reverence for the text; in my musicianship, the professionals I choose to trust are those who first serve the music, without ego. Such is Grant’s approach to Shakespeare."
-Danielle Long (Indiana University, Bloomington IN)
"I’ve had the opportunity to work with Grant in classes and individual audition coachings, and his guidance, knowledge, and enthusiasm have completely reinvigorated my interest in Shakespeare. He gave me the tools to raise myself into heightened language of all sorts, from Elizabethan verse to Sarah Ruhl, while maintaining a grounded, personal connection to the argument. He is a delightful instructor and mentor!"
-Grania Whelan (Indiana University, Bloomington IN)
"I have spent the majority of my career running from Shakespeare because I never understood it until I met Grant Goodman. He saw something in me that I did not see in myself and that was an ability to tackle the language in Shakespearean plays. He didn't stop with his belief in me, he took his own time which is very valuable, and gave me lessons on how to understand the language better. He also helped me prepare for an audition for a Shakespearean play at a prestigious theater and I would not have felt confident in doing this without his tutelage. I received a callback and later was asked to be a part of the cast, and I can assure you that that would not have happened without Grant Goodman. He is honest, easy to work with, and meets you where you are at. Grant Goodman is a great teacher and an even greater person. In my personal and professional opinion, he's the best!!"
-Mikell Sapp (Professional Actor - Twin Cities, MN)
"I was fortunate to work with Grant on my first show outside of school and I was fortunate that he took me under his wing and mentored me. From him I learned what it took to be an actor who is dedicated to his craft and who is constantly searching for ways to improve. I owe a large part of my work ethic to him. It won't matter if I'm performing in a barn in New Mexico, on a Broadway stage, or in a highly anticipated film, I will always lean on Grant's expertise during the process. His ability to make the difficult concepts easy to understand is a skill that I will never take for granted.`` -Xavier Edward King (Professional Actor-NYC/Jeff Award Nominee)
"I first met Grant in my Acting III class at Indiana University Bloomington in the early fall of 2023. He graciously came in as a guest instructor and guided us through a unique warm-up and a Meisner-inspired exercise. He elaborated on observational techniques we could use to strengthen our performances and increase our ability to stay "in the moment" with our scene partner/s. I found this one class session with Grant more efficacious and validating than years of other acting courses. In October of 2023 we began rehearsals for our February 2024 main-stage production of Measure for Measure in which I was the assistant director. Grant worked as the text coach, and I got to observe his group sessions with the cast; I believe we all grew immensely as actors and Shakespeare thinkers because of this. There is no one else I know with more passion for and knowledge of Shakespeare. Personally, Grant has supplied me with valuable acting and directing tools, introducing me to new styles and techniques that have had a tremendous impact on my experience in theatre. His guidance has been instrumental in my continuation down this career path, and I am extremely grateful for his support. Grant cares deeply for all of his students and mentees, providing endless resources and encouragement; I highly recommend him as a teacher and a mentor."
